So you’ve figured out what your dreams are. Now what? If you are anything like me, your dreams scare you. Although we are often told to ”dream big,” our vast aspirations seldom come into fruition because they seem unattainable. In the words of Queen Shonda Rhimes,

“Dreams are lovely. But they are just dreams. Fleeting, ephemeral, pretty. But dreams do not come true just because you dream them. It’s hard work that makes things happen. It’s hard work that creates change.”

We can’t just expect your dreams to come to us. We need to do the work. A lot of us, however, don’t know what “the work” is. This can be extremely daunting. I’m here to let you know that you can take a deep breath. Go ahead…breathe. Start with what you have, and figure out something that you can do today. And do it again tomorrow. And the day after that. I know it’s easier said than done, but try to break those big dreams into small, measurable goals.

Maybe you can spend the day brainstorming a plan, or watching informative Youtube videos to get an idea of what your next step should be. Maybe you need to sign up for that class, or apply to that program. It’s up to you to do something everyday—no matter how small. In reality, dreams reside in the journey rather than the destination. Once you start taking steps toward your dream, you start living it—even if you haven’t seen any results yet.

By being mindful and intentional with our resources, we can live our dreams one day at a time.
