Hi beauties…long time no see! I know that I initially said that I’d be posting weekly, but I may need to re-evaluate that. I need to figure out a rhythm that better supports my time and creativity.

Don’t worry though, I didn’t come empty-handed this week.

Your girl has been creating.

It’s interesting how much my thinking has shifted since the last time I wrote here a few weeks ago. I’ve been spending a lot of time immersed in film lately — the softness of Sylvie’s Love, the elegance and messiness of Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the sheer aesthetic opulence of Marie Antoinette. All of it has been grounding my storytelling in a way that feels a lot more intentional.

Lately, I’ve been drawn to moments where nothing particularly dramatic happens on the surface, but so much is unfolding beneath it–giving us more insight into the character.

Here’s a small snippet from the novel I’ve been working on.

For clarity, this is a work of fiction, not a memoir.

“She watched Maurice sleep. He was fine-fine (a step above fine and two notches above handsome) even in REM sleep. This man, who Sade had a major crush on in law school– the man who she convinced herself was too good for her–was laying right next to her, mouth slightly open, unconscious. If she wanted to, she could have stolen one of his expensive watches and paid off several of her past due credit card bills. Would he even notice? She shook the thought away, opened the consignment app on her phone, and listed her Chanel earrings for $575 instead.”

These characters have lived in my head for a long time, and it feels good to finally share small pieces of them with you. I’m looking forward to exploring them more deeply. More to come.

Until next time,

-D.
